The US-Africa Air Transportation Summit is a biannual conference aimed at gathering leaders in the aviation sector to discuss developing direct air linkages between the US and African countries.
The Need for Direct Air Service
In the 21st Century, direct air service is the critical link to trade development between two markets.Â
Since 2005, the US-Africa Air Transportation Summit has focused on identifying the barriers and solutions to air service growth between the U.S. and Africa. A number of barriers has been examined, including, but not limited to those associated with aviation safety and security; bilateral agreements; air service demand; the absence of U.S. carriers in the U.S./Africa markets; lack of destination marketing by African countries; the negative perception of the African market among U.S. air carriers and the American air traveler; financing and development of Africa’s airport infrastructure; and passenger facilitation challenges including securing a U.S. visa for African tourists.
Prior to 2005, there were 2,468 direct flights weekly to the Caribbean, 2105 to Mexico, 855 to Asia, 600 to Central America and 548 to South America from U.S.; but only 23 direct flights between the U.S. and Africa. Between 2005 and 2014, direct flights between the U.S. and Africa increased from 23, to about 36,an increase of more than 50 percent. Equally important is the fact that all African airlines in the market increased their flights and the market attracted major U.S. carriers.
Summit Objective
The focus of the US-Africa Air Transportation Summit is to assess how the advancement of technology in various Aviation sectors is contributing, or can contribute to the enhancement of air service development between the US and Africa.
Summit Content
Experts will present and analyze a range of technologically advanced topics including longer range aircraft, airplane and airfield navigation devices, wireless communication in ground handling
operations, security screening devices, online self service booking, social media, self-service check-in and other customer service devices, cargo handling and logistics – all with the objective to determine their impacts, if any, on accelerating the growth of air service between the U. S. and Africa.
